Mohegan Sun Casino Reviews

We wanted a place to stay for just one night, and decided to try the Mohegan Sun Casino RV lot, figuring that a free lot for the night beats paying to stay some where. I agree with previous reviews. I've been going to Mohegan Sun for several years and love it. It's clean and safe whether you travel alone or with your friends or family. There are plenty of slot machines although it gets pretty. I've stayed at casino hotels all across the USA-atlantic city, las vegas, etc. A world at play and a world to its own, Mohegan Sun offers the best in entertainment. Laugh along with hilarious comedians or catch a live band at Comix Roadhouse.Don't forget about Thursday night karaoke at where you can take your place in the spotlight to show off your skills!

Mohegan Sun Casino launched in the New Jersey online casino market in July 2015, only a few months after its sister site Resorts Casino debuted in February of that year. As you may guess from the latter brand, both casinos are under the management of Resorts in Atlantic City.

The sites have been consistently adding game titles ever since. The steady increase in game choices illustrates just how competitive the market in NJ has become, and for players, that’s a good thing. Read on for my full review…

Summary:

Mohegan Sun has been adding games faster than anyone else in the market, except their sister casino Resorts. The result is a dramatically improved selection in all three key areas: slots, tables, and video poker. The straightforward loyalty program is also a welcome feature. With the huge inventory of games, this one is an easy thumbs up.

Mohegan Sun began in 1996 with the opening of a land-based casino in Connecticut, managed by the Mohegan tribe of Native Americans. The brand expanded in 2006 when the tribe opened Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs in Pennsylvania. A 2012 agreement to manage Resorts Casino in Atlantic City eventually led to the creation of the tribe’s two online casinos in NJ, Mohegan Sun and Resorts Casino. In this review, I will focus only on the first, Mohegan Sun.

Slots, Slots, and More Slots

With a relentless pace of game additions, Mohegan Sun and Resorts have joined Golden Nugget as the only online casinos in NJ to have more than 300 different slot titles available. That’s a staggering number, and it is still climbing on a weekly basis. (Just to be clear, the game numbers in the box above are updated daily.)

Mohegan Sun’s stable of games includes titles from a dozen different developers, including NextGen Gaming, NetEnt, IGT, High 5 Games, and Aristocrat. I picked out a handful of slots that were new to me to showcase here.

One of the first games I checked out was Spiñata Grande, an animal piñata themed game from NetEnt.

(Click on an image to enlarge. You can navigate with arrow keys, swiping left and right on your mobile device, or by clicking the forward and back arrows.)

This game features “Colossal Symbols”, which are 2×2 or 3×3 blocks of the same symbol. During the free spins bonus round, a 3×3 Colossal Wild block can appear.

I found almost all of the NextGen games to be fun. This one is Foxin’ Wins.
The animation that happens away from the reels is the real star of this game, keeping it interesting.

Among the High 5 Games that are present at Mohegan Sun, here was one that I had not encountered before: Pearl Bay, featuring locking wilds and increasing multipliers in the bonus round.

Video Poker – Most Improved

Video poker has been a common weak point in the NJ market, and I am thrilled to say things are much improved. At Mohegan Sun, when I did the review last year, they offered only six versions of VP. What a difference a year has made! The video poker game count is now up to a very respectable 18 games! That’s not tops in NJ, but it’s awfully close.

The IGT games are still the best in class, with the usual favorites available: Jacks or Better (99.54%), Bonus Poker (99.17%), Double Bonus Poker (99.11%), and Double Double Bonus Poker (98.98%).

Table Games – Lots of Duplicates

Mohegan has added only three new table game choices over the last year. With a total of 17 table games, it doesn’t sound bad until you look at the specifics. There are 8 versions of blackjack, and 6 versions of roulette, which doesn’t leave room for much else. The remaining three games are Three Card Poker, Let It Ride, and Baccarat. Despite the relatively high number of games, this is just an average offering.

Note that the baccarat game is a no-commission version, which increases the house edge on the banker bet to an unacceptably high 4%. If you play it, stick to the player bet.

For roulette, the straightforward “European Roulette” by NYX Gaming is a simple single-zero wheel with a decent user interface for betting.

Some of the available blackjack versions:

  • Atlantic City Blackjack (NextGen): 8 decks, Blackjack pays 3:2, Dealer stands on all 17s, Split once, Double any 2 cards, Double after Split allowed, Late Surrender. A very reasonable house edge of only 0.41%.
  • Blackjack (IGT): 6 decks, Blackjack pays 3:2, Dealer stands on all 17s, Split up to two times, Double any 2 cards, Double after split allowed, No surrender. The same house edge, at 0.41%.
  • Vegas Blackjack (NYX): 4 decks, multiple hands, Blackjack pays 3:2, Dealer stands on all 17s, Split once, Double any 2 cards, Double after Split allowed, No Surrender. House edge is 0.40%.
  • Micro Limit Blackjack (NYX): 8 decks, multiple hands, Blackjack pays 6:5, except suited Blackjack pays 2:1, Dealer stands on all 17s, Split once, Double any 2 cards, Double after Split allowed, No Surrender, Rehit split aces, 777 pays 3:1, and 5+ card 21 pays 2:1. Despite the 6:5 payoff on BJ, all the odd additions bring the house edge back down to 0.38%. It will be a volatile game though, because of the extra payouts on more rare hands.

It is surprising that these games with quite different rules all have almost the same theoretical hold. While none of the games are remarkably good, they are all reasonably competitive for the market.

The Atlantic City Blackjack version is an attractive implementation, and gameplay is easy. It’s actually my favorite here.

Mohegan Sun First Deposit Bonus

The signup offer at Mohegan Sun is a big one, but like most of the deposit offers in NJ it comes with stiff wagering requirements. They will match your first deposit, up to $1000 in bonus play. To claim the bonus, follow the instructions on the casino website.

The bonus is based on your initial deposit. If you deposit $50, your deposit will be matched with another $50. If you deposit $1000, you get an extra $1000. But please make sure you understand the wagering requirements before you go for that big bonus. Once the bonus money is in your account, you will need to meet the wagering requirements before withdrawing, unless you cancel the bonus and any winnings derived from it.

To meet the bonus requirements, if you play slots you must wager the bonus amount 20X. If you play video poker or table games, the required wagering is 100X the bonus. That is a lot of play you must survive before you can withdraw a profit from the bonus. But if you plan to play a lot already, this is a great way to improve your chances with free extra money. On the other hand, if you prefer to hit and run with shorter amounts of play, accepting the bonus might not be a good idea for you.

As always, bonus rules can and do change all the time. Be sure to check the website for the current details.

Deposits and Withdrawals

Deposit options at Mohegan Sun are typical:

  • Online Bank Transfer (Bill Pay): Direct transfer from your compatible bank account.
  • e-Check (ACH): Transfer from your bank account using the routing number and account number.
  • Mastercard: Both credit and debit cards can be used. Be careful though. Many issuers will treat a deposit as a cash advance and charge fees as a result.
  • Visa: Note that some Visa card issuers will decline online casino transactions.
  • Resorts Casino Cashier: You can deposit cash at the cage at Resorts in Atlantic City.
  • MoheganSunCard: This is a branded card from Mohegan Sun that behaves like a Discover card. Contact them for details.

For withdrawing, there are two options:

  • Bank Transfer: Provide your routing number and account number for a direct bank transfer.
  • Resorts Casino Cashier: You can pick up cash in person at Resorts Atlantic City.

For the latest up-to-date info on deposit and withdrawal methods, check the Mohegan Sun website.

Loyalty Program

Mohegan Sun has a very good loyalty system. Actually, it has two of them. If you already have a player card at Mohegan’s land-based casinos, you can connect your “Momentum Card” account to the online casino, and automatically earn Momentum Dollars to use in the land-based casinos as you play online.

In addition, the online casino has its own rewards system. As you play, you earn “Gems” which allow you to advance through the six different tier levels of the program. At the moment, you can automatically get upgraded to their third level “Amethyst” just by showing you have an account at another of the NJ online casinos. See the site for details.

Gems can be cashed in for free play at various rates depending on your tier. At the higher levels, the cashback can amount to a fairly substantial sum by today’s standards. You’ll definitely want to keep an eye on what it takes to advance through the tiers, especially if you find that you are near the next level before cashing in.

Final Thoughts, and a Personal Story

Mohegan Sun is unquestionably a great addition to the NJ market for slot players. And now, with the improvement in video poker offerings they are very competitive in that area as well. However, for table game players, it lands in the middle of the pack due to the unimaginative slate of games. In my opinion, they get extra consideration for having a useful and simple loyalty program. This is an area where many of their competitors could learn a lot from Mohegan.

The Mohegan brand has special memories for me personally, as my first visit to their Connecticut property came in a dramatic fashion. I was picked up at the Providence RI airport in a limo, along with several other notable members of the blackjack community, many of whom I had never met in person before. The occasion was the premiere season of GSN’s World Series of Blackjack, where I was among the 25 notable names in blackjack who were invited to compete for the title of World Blackjack Champion. I won my first televised table, but my luck fell short at the final table where I finished in fifth place. Despite not being crowned the champ, the event was an amazing experience, giving me the opportunity to meet and compete against longtime idols of mine like Micky Rosa, Mike Aponte, James Grosjean, and Stanford Wong.

What does all that have to do with Mohegan’s online casino in New Jersey? Not a thing, of course. But I treasure the memories I have from the first World Series of Blackjack.

I hope you are able to generate some memories of your own at Mohegan Sun.

MoheganSunCasino.com launched in New Jersey in 2015 and quickly carved out a place in what was already a competitive online gambling market.

Mohegan Sun Casino managed to do so fairly quickly thanks in part to its partnership with NYX Gaming, which is one of the stronger casino platforms on the internet today.

Since launching, Mohegan Sun Casino has paid more than $330 million in winnings to players.

With NYX Gaming serving as the software provider, Mohegan Sun Casino is able to deliver more than 500 slots, table games and video poker games to customers accessing the site on the go or from a desktop computer. Desktop users can access the full range of games at MoheganSunCasino.com with no download necessary while iOS and Android users can download the official mobile app to play online.

For anyone wondering how a land-based casino based out of Connecticut came to run an online casino in New Jersey, that was made possible by an agreement reached with Resorts Casino and Hotel in Atlantic City. Under the arrangement, Resorts AC provides the NJ gaming license while Mohegan Sun manages the day-to-day operations of the gambling site under its own name. Thus, MoheganSunCasino.com was born.

One thing worth noting up front is that MoheganSunCasino.com is strictly an online casino. This site does not offer sports betting or online poker at this time. Mohegan Sun is a strong option for casino players, but you’ll want to look elsewhere for sports betting and poker.

Snapshot: Mohegan Sun Casino boasts a collection of 500+ slots, video poker and table games with an online gaming license from the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement. This is a strong choice for pure casino gamblers, but the lack of sports betting and poker will be a turn-off for many.

Pros:

  • Licensed by the NJ Division of Gaming Enforcement
  • Strong gaming platform for desktop and mobile
  • Daily promotions with guaranteed prizes
  • Fast and easy deposits

Cons:

Reviews
  • VIP program not great for recreational players
  • No person-vs-person poker or sports betting
  • Not many promotions

Mohegan Sun Casino Bonuses

Mohegan Sun Casino offers a standard match-deposit bonus for all new customers as well as an ongoing “spin the wheel” promotion that you can take advantage of for a guaranteed prize every single day.

The promotional offerings beyond these two are a bit sparse, but the ongoing “spin the wheel” promotion offsets that downside to an extent. Still, it would be nice to see Mohegan Sun Online host additional promos on a regular basis.

100% up to $1,000 Deposit Bonus

Mohegan Sun Online Casino offers all new customers a large welcome bonus that will match your first deposit dollar for dollar to give you up to $1,000 in bonus funds. You can claim the bonus by signing up for an account, logging in and then visiting My Bonuses in the My Account menu.

From there, choose Deposit next to the Mohegan code under Active Bonuses to make your first deposit and claim your welcome offer. The bigger your first deposit, the bigger your bonus.

This is one of the largest deposit bonuses on the market, but it comes with hefty clearing requirements that make the bonus difficult to clear and not as valuable as it first appears.

After receiving your bonus funds, you’ll have to roll over the bonus 30 times on slots or 150 times on table games, roulette and video poker before withdrawing the bonus money or anything won by wagering the bonus money.

What this means is if you were to deposit $1,000 and get a $1,000 bonus, you would have to wager $30,000 on slots or $150,000 on table games before withdrawing. By the time you run that much money through any casino game, the odds are the house advantage will have significantly cut into the value of your bonus. On top of all that, you only have 30 days to meet the wagering requirements before the bonus is forfeited.

Spin for Guaranteed Prizes Every Day

If the deposit bonus is a bit underwhelming, the daily games offered to all customers serves as a much-needed consolation prize. Once you have a Mohegan Sun Casino account, you can log in every day to spin the free slot and play the wheel game to earn cash bonuses, entries into a weekly $1500 drawing or a top prize of $3,000,000.

You can test your luck each day by logging in to your account, spinning the wheels to see what you’ve won and then hitting Redeem to claim your prize. You get one spin on each of the following games and are guaranteed to win one of the following prizes from each.

Free Slot Game

  • $10,000 bonus
  • $5 bonus
  • $2 bonus
  • $1 bonus
  • 10 entries to the weekly $1500 drawing

Wheel Game

  • $3,000,000
  • $50 bonus
  • $5 bonus
  • $2 bonus
  • $1 bonus
  • 5 entries to the weekly $1500 drawing

The $3 million top prize is paid as cash, but the other prizes are treated as bonuses and must be cleared before they can be withdrawn. Any bonuses won from the daily games at Mohegan Sun must be wagered 5 times on slots or 25 times on other games.

Mohegan Sun Rewards Program

Sun

The Mohegan Sun VIP program has its strong and weak points. On the strong side, it offers cash back rewards to all players no matter how casual they may be. Whether you’re a recreational player or high roller, the VIP program will boost your bottom line.

The other strong point for the VIP program is that it links online and in-person rewards. As you move up through the various loyalty levels, you earn online benefits such as increased cash back rewards along with in-person benefits such as comped rooms in NJ, CT and PA. High rollers get the best treatment of all with complementary dinners, limo transportation to various casinos and more.

These positive points are partially offset by two major weak points. First, the VIP program is not all that rewarding unless you’re a heavy player. Recreational players do earn a little cash back, but the conversion rates are low until you’ve reached the highest tiers in the loyalty program. Second, the program overly complicated for what it offers. There are nine tiers in the loyalty program and the Mohegan Sun has an entire section of its website full of charts and pages of explanations dedicated to explaining every tier in the rewards program. It’s all a bit much to take in and that makes it hard to truly see how much you’re benefiting from the program.

Elevate Points and Cash Back Rewards

The Mohegan Sun Casino rewards program centers around Elevate Points (EPs), which are earned by playing slots, table games and video poker. All players earn EPs at the same rate regardless of their tier status in the rewards program:

Mohegan Sun Casino Reviews
  • 1 EP for every $1 wagered on slots
  • 1 EP for every $2 wagered on roulette
  • 1 EP for every $4 wagered on blackjack and video poker

The number of EPs you earn each month determines your level in the VIP club. All players start out at the “Storm” level and can move up from there based on EPs earned in the previous month. In addition to unlocking various benefits, each level in the VIP club allows customers to redeem EPs for cash at increased rates.

As we can see here, the cash conversion rate for lower-level VIP members is not all that great. At the bottom level, you need to wager $4,000 in slots just to get $1 in cash back. The rate improves drastically from there, but you need to be a fairly high volume player before the VIP program really starts to bear fruit.

Mohegan Sun Mobile App and Software

While there is certainly room for improvement in its bonus offerings and VIP program, one thing Mohegan Sun Online gets spot-on right is the software platform. The NYX Gaming platform that powers Mohegan Sun is arguably the best on the market in terms of quality, ease of use and loading times.

Desktop users can play online at MoheganSunCasino.com with no download necessary. There are just over 500 games to choose from on the desktop platform and all games load in-browser. Mohegan Sun also has iOS and Android apps for mobile users. The mobile app has about 340 slots plus a few dozen other games such as blackjack, roulette, scratch cards and video poker.

Overall, the game selection here is bigger than average thanks to NYX Gaming’s ability to bring numerous third-party software developers on board. When playing at Mohegan Sun, you’ll find games from all manner of gaming providers such as NetEnt, NextGen, IGT, NYX and more.

Mohegan Sun Slots

Slots are where Mohegan Sun shines with more than 480 slots of all different types and a rating system that allows players to rate their favorite slots. From the homepage, you can select All Slot to see the full list along with ratings for every slot for a little help in narrowing down your choices.

My Mohegan Sign In

The website also provides a search feature to find slots by name and filters to organize the list by ratings or staff favorites. Two features the Mohegan Sun doesn’t offer that it should offer are an ability to filter games by jackpot and by software provider. It would be nice, for example, to be able to quickly find all progressive jackpot games or all NetEnt titles with a simple filter.

Game quality and styling varies massively from slot to slot – Mohegan Sun Casino has a little bit of everything. You’ll find NetEnt titles with advanced graphics, classic IGT titles that look like they came straight from the casino floor and Slingo originals. The various game types are all jumbled together so again, it would be nice to see better sort/filter features.

Among the collection are three progressive jackpot games. Cleopatra and Siberian Storm, both from IGT, share a progressive jackpot that sat a little north of $530,000 at the time of this review. Divine Fortune by NetEnt featured a top jackpot of just over $77,000.

Mohegan Sun Live Dealer Games

Mohegan Sun Casino also has a collection of live dealer games that includes blackjack, roulette, auto roulette, ultimate Texas Holdem, three card poker and baccarat. Five or more live dealer blackjack tables can be found on offer during busy hours and a couple games that are streamed straight from the casino floor of Resorts Casino in Atlantic City.

Two of the live dealer roulette games also stream video from the Resorts Casino floor. One is a standard roulette wheel that follows the action live while the other follows an auto roulette wheel that you can watch in real time even as resort visitors place their wagers. It makes for about as immersive an experience as you can get without actually stepping foot in the casino.

Table Games and Video Poker

Mohegan Sun Casino has a total of twenty table games on offer. Just six of these are available through the mobile app while all twenty are offered at MoheganSunCasino.com. The full list of table games includes:

  • Blackjack (nine variations)
  • Roulette (six variations)
  • Double Bonus Spin Roulette
  • 3 Wheel Roulette
  • Three Card Poker
  • Let It Ride
  • No Commission Baccarat

Of these games, the mobile app offers:

  • Blackjack (four variations)
  • Roulette
  • 3 Wheel Roulette

Of the twenty video poker variations offered at Mohegan Sun, all twenty are offered at the full desktop website and a dozen of those are available through the mobile app. Players have these options at hand:

  • Aces and Faces Power Poker
  • 100 Hand All American
  • Destiny Poker
  • Deuces Wild (three variations)
  • Bonus Poker (four variations)
  • Jacks or Better (two variations)
  • Regal Poker (four variations)
  • Multi-Hand Five Play Draw Poker
  • Multi-Hand Triple Play Draw Poker
  • Jester Poker
  • Tens or Better

Mohegan Sun Banking Methods

Mohegan Sun Casino is flexible when it comes to deposit methods. Whether you have cash, credit, debit or just a bank account, there is a way to move that money into your Mohegan Sun account so you can play today.

  • ACH eCheck: This deposit method requires only that you have a bank account. Choose this option from inside the cashier, fill out the banking info and choose an amount to deposit. Your Mohegan Sun account will be credited instantly.
  • PayPal: If you haven’t heard of it by now, PayPal is the world’s largest online e-wallet. A PayPal account allows you to transfer money straight from your bank to your gambling account or to store money online. The main advantage of e-wallets such as PayPal is they allow you to keep your gambling bankroll completely separate from all your other, non-gambling money.
  • Online Bank Transfer: This deposit method uses your bank’s online bill pay feature to authorize deposits to your Mohegan Sun account. If you select this option, you’ll be taken to a secure page hosted on your bank’s website where you’ll verify the deposit using your existing online banking login.
  • PayNearMe: This is the option to use if you have physical cash in hand and want to gamble with that. Select PayNearMe and choose an amount to receive a pay slip. You can print the slip or save it to your phone and then take it to your local 7-Eleven. Pay the cashier with cash and your gaming account will be funded shortly afterwards.
  • Visa and Mastercard: Credit and debit cards branded with the Visa or Mastercard logo are accepted at MoheganSunCasino.com.
  • Resorts Casino Hotel Cage: If you’re near Resorts Casino in Atlantic City, you can stop by the cashier’s cage inside the casino to make a cash deposit. The cashier will ask for your Mohegan Sun account info and a photo ID.

Mohegan Sun State-by-State Operations

Mohegan Gaming & Entertainment owns casinos in five states and one in South Korea. In the US, this includes two Mohegan Sun Casinos, one each in Connecticut and Pennsylvania. The company also operates Resorts AC in New Jersey, ilani in Washington State and Paragon in Louisiana.

If the right legislation is enacted, we can expect to see Mohegan Sun expand its online gambling and sports betting operations moving forward.

Mohegan Sun New Jersey

  • Sports Betting Availability: Mobile betting and a retail sportsbook
  • Retail Sportsbook: Resorts Casino AC

Mohegan Gaming got its first taste of online gambling in the New Jersey market with the launch of Resorts Casino Online in 2015. Resorts Online ran a sizable collection of slots and table games for the first few years before expanding into online sports betting.

Today, Resorts AC operates one mobile sportsbook under its own name and a second in partnership with DraftKings. The huge success of DraftKings in New Jersey has been a boon for Resorts Casino as well, making it the second-most profitable sportsbook operator in New Jersey.

Mohegan Sun Pennsylvania

  • Sports Betting Availability: Mobile betting and retail sportsbook coming soon
  • Retail Sportsbook: Mohegan Sun Pocono

Mohegan Sun Pocono will be operating online casino games and sports betting in the very near future. The Pennsylvania Gambling Control Board (PGCB) has already approved the casino’s licensing requests to operate online sports betting, slots and table games. Now, it is just a matter of time as Mohegan Sun gets everything in place to launch.

In January 2019, Mohegan Sun announced a partnership with international gaming giant Kindred Group. The Kindred Group is best known for its flagship gambling site Unibet, which operates as one of the biggest gaming sites on the planet with 20 million+ customers.

As far as a start date goes for Mohegan Sun PA sports betting, casino officials have yet to name a specific day. However, a casino representative has recently said the casino aims to have sports betting in place by the start of the 2019 NFL season.

Lawmakers in Connecticut have introduced legislation to legalize sports betting in each of the last two years but have failed to get anything past the finish line. Still, the interest is there and it seems to be a matter of “if” rather than “when” for CT sports betting. When that happens, the original Mohegan Sun will be ready to capitalize.

Mohegan Sun Washington

Mohegan Sun Online Casino Reviews

  • Sports Betting Availability: None
  • Retail Sportsbook: None

Mohegan Gaming runs the ilani in Washington State and could easily launch sports betting should it be legalized. What won’t be so easy is convincing local lawmakers and stakeholders to craft a sports betting bill everyone can agree on. Numerous pieces of legislation have been introduced in recent times, but none have come even close to passing.

Mohegan Sun Louisiana

  • Sports Betting Availability: None

Louisiana has yet to legalize sports betting, but the odds are looking pretty good a bill will be passed sooner rather than later. If (when) that happens, Paragon Casino Resort in Marksville will give Mohegan Gaming its path to sports betting in Louisiana.
